Godfather Restaurant - I'm gonna speak Italian to Mike

Here is the famous restaurant scene with Sicilian/English subtitles as far as I understood it. I appreciate any help or corrections. *** MuffinMario helped me correcting one sentence. Here's what he wrote: valentino, great job. I think that right before Mike turns to English, instead of saying: "do you want to play" in Sicilian, he's actually saying: "but i want that" or "ma voggiu ca" instead of "ma vu giucar". Notice that he says in English: "what i want"

Thanks for responding. Yes Al pacino is one of my favorite actors, I think one of his strongest roles personally was Dog day Afternoon, when he was on the telephone with his "lover" - some of the best acting I've ever seen. I agree though.. It's a story, and the motives behind the killings of these men are explained, however like you said, people just think "YES! SHOOT HIM! BANG BANG! COOL!"

Good comment. I observed the same thing. I guess, it's a typical youtube phenomenon. As I wrote before, I posted this clip for other reasons: The outstanding performance of Pacino and the translation of the Sicilian part. Anyway, I believe, Godfather i a great film, a modern tragedy. And just like in the ancient Greek tragedies, murder is part of the story. I think some people over-identify role+actor=Michael + Pacino.

Here is my question, and this just goes to anybody. I've watched a few movie clips here and there, and I notice when anyone gets killed by Corlone's, people say "Hurray! He'a dead! Congradulations on the murder" But my question is.. Why cheer for death? Why cheer for the killing of another? For what purpose do we kill each other and is it reasonable? Is it the same when America cheered as we bombed afghanistan and killed innocent civilians? How about innocent bystanders in drive-bys

shouldn't have let him gone to the bathroom

Various Italians came to America speaking different dialects, so these dialects mixed. Also, many Italian-American Mafiosi were from Sicilia or Nàpule, so it makes sense that Mafiosi in America would speak in a mixture of Sicilianu and Napolitano (Campanian)

I agree with you. What makes the scene so great is not the actual killing but the development of "Michael's" emotions. Especially I love the scene in the bathroom which I had to cut here because this clip is about the translation.

God, look at Pacino, its all in the eyes. Easily some of the best acting in film history. He goes from determined, to frustrated, to nervous and then scared. Notice how when he actually has the gun his eyes are very evasive, he wont look directly at either of them, like hes trying not to look the in the eye when he kills them. Then he pulls the trigger. BRILLIANT

yea in the directors commentary i think he mentioned it or mayb someone else he explained why. i dont remember exactly but he stated somethin to the effect that it is such a powerful scene he feels subtitles would ruin the integretiy of it. he doesnt like subtitles in general.
cowboy0212 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Aaah..that sounds like an reasonable purpose! I like it better without the subtitles!
janakazi (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
personally I think the reason it was omitted was so that we wouldn't pay attention to the exchange of dialogue, and focus our attention on the environment, and the tension building before mike's first hit. I like it better without - but I'm just used to that i guess.
