so biased. software is leading in commercial and non commercial music production today. it has many advantages as a 'simultaneous' or multitrack recording device. it can cost equal too or less than many hardware recorders. i find older people are more biased towards hardware recording equiptment over software based. i found myself getting annoyed by the biased opinions of this video. however, some very good general advice from this guy

Contrary to josta, I tend to agree with the presenter that 4 inputs are a minimum. It's often done with less, but 4 & up just gives you more flexibility. Like listening to music, where speakers will make the most difference, when recording, the microphone makes the most difference. Get the best mics you can afford and especially that you like the sound of. You won't be sorry. Shure SM57 & SM58 are great, but everyone has them. It's also good to have a nice alternative for getting other tones.

Like a couple of other people said, this is not the only way to record to software. I've been recording for years, self-taught, and I don't have any equipment with four inputs. I have one mic that plugs right into the computer, just one input, and I record each part individually into a WAV editor. Then I engineer and mix all the WAVs together. It's like a puzzle, and I love it. With lots of practice you can sound like the pros.
