You could also say that forgiveness is then a sign of regret (which is what the song is about; the video being about forgiveness).

Actually, it kind of does. Think about it:

It's kind of like losing friendship with someone. Breaking up with them. Then regretting it for the rest of your life. Making a mistake.
The addict made a mistake and regretted it. The couple are fighting and are going to/have regretted it. The two guys who crashed are fighting as well.
They're all making errors and mistakes that they'll regret doing later on - even if they forgive themselves.
