Mario, Yoshi, Wario were all original.
and maybe Luigi, he was a pallete swap at first, then again he had proved himself as an individual hero.
Waluigi was just a 'hey, why not?'
Seriously, i rate Waluigi in Mariokart, he's actually got pretty good handling.
other than that, he's got nothing exclusive and almost useless.

i know... they frikin put YOSHI as the 4th character when the other three are Mario, Luigi and Wario... WTF! Three plumbers and a dinosaur? THERE IS A FOURTH PLUMBER, DAMMIT!! Waluigi was robbed of his place in an adventure game
