I'm doing my last undergraduate semester in a psychology degree at university. I was deciding between a medical or psychology degree and chose the latter. I've never looked back. Psychology is very interesting and really makes you critically think about things. Psychologists work in many domains, not just restricted to hospital/private practice like a psychiatrist. Psychologists have a much better quality of life and less stress than psychiatrists.

Thank you very much. You information really helps. Right now I'm working on my psychology degree, but sometimes I felt like I wanted to be a psychiatrist. Now I know that I'm actually on the right path. I really want to be a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. Thanks again :)

Very interesting. I never knew about the different schools of thought that psychiatrists/psychologists prescribe themselves to. Perhaps you can help me, I am a senior in high school and I have had my mind fixed on being a psychologist the past two years. I've always been one against medicine which is the governing reason that I don't want to be a psychiatrist, despite the better pay. Lately I've been questioning my decision and recently heard a new statistic that frightens me.

You seem genuine and that's refreshing.

Couldnt have been said better, yu would have to be pretty naive to think depression in the common sense is genetic.
If you were to make this argument I would suggest stop taking those drugs yu believe in and get back in touch with reality and to see whats really out there, there is a simple answer through cause and effect by what we be believe as our philosophical thinking which is completely tangeable and you dont need a PHD or any degree to see that.

Mylesperhour23 so the only real difference is that a psychiatrist can prescribe drugs and gets paid a little more for his or her medical know how.

A psychatriast ACTUALLY went to medical school. Who knows where the so called Psychologists have gone to .
Some call themselves psychologists with a 4 yr degree no PHD .
watch old Woody allen movies like Sleeper to see what a psychologist is lmao

In the U.K. there isn't as much psychologist v. psychiatrist antipathy. We are lucky in the U.K. to still have a national health service and often the psychologist, psychiatrist and other health professionals are able to work as a team in treating a patient.
Psychologists and psychiatrists have plenty to learn from each other - the psychologist has a sophisticated knowledge of theories about the mind, the psychiatrist has physiological knowledge that could be of use to the psychologist.

Also in some states psychologists are now allowed to prescribe medications like in Louisiana.
If that were the only difference the playing field is leveled in those states.
There is a huge philosophical difference between the schools of treatment. Biological psychiatry views all mental problems as brain diseases while psychology views most mental problems as informational or psychological.

In practice it ends up being quite different. Therapy takes a long time and is a big investment of time for a psychologist. Handing out a prescription often takes about 10 mins.
Because of this most psychiatrists do not actually give therapy at all, they only prescribe since by doing so they can see several times as many patients and hence make much more money.
Despite what you see on TV, most psychiatrists do not give talk therapy at all. |
