I would think that the knife-guy was in love with the girl, but wanted to kill her because she was in love with someone else.
But then I get confused when the girl smiles in the end with teary eyes. My final guess is they both never knew each other. The guy wanted to kill her, but then fell in love with her. And in the end the girl knows that, so she smiles

Ancient poets and writers used ambiguity a lot. They told a story or described something, but left it unconclusive, so that the audience could make their own reasonings using their imaginations to please themselves
So you cant say whether the guy with the knife was the girl's lover, a stranger, taking a supari, or that the girl riding in the car was being taken away for prostitution or not.
Sure, you can make the most reasonable assumptions, but in the end there is no "right" or "wrong" answer
