Linus Torvalds took part, with the help of a lot of other programmers through the Internet, in the development of a program called kernel which then he named after himself as "Linux". After the development was completed some of the people using that Linux "kernel found out that if they mixed the Linux kernel with the GNU system which was freely available from the Free Software Foundation website then one could have a complete operating system the GNU/Linux operating system.
