These atrocities were also committed in the North. The South had more blacks, thus more were killed. And I do believe that that was a time known as the "civil rights movement," whereby all Americans were granted equal rights and freedoms. Again, many nations are still struggling with this concept.

We were also the first nation to give people the rights to free speech, freedom of and from religion, and the right to keep and bear arms. The US has far less prejudice than many other nations, who are still struggling with these concepts. We value the individual and his/her freedom above all else. This is what makes us so powerful.
