My guess is, Sprite funded the mecha(s) as one big "Up yours" to Coca-Cola and they recruited rappers as amnesty for whatever charges they have against them.

My mind clearly does not have the capacity to comprehend how the collaborative efforts of various east and west coast hip-hop artists, at the helm of a giant mecha, fighting against other giant mecha to promote carbonated sugar-water would work out. Perhaps I'm simply missing something.
